From Intervale to Japan
Last week, out of the blue, we received an Instagram message from an American living in Saga, Japan.
And it was a pretty cool message.
He had found and bought one of our shirts in a thrift shop in Japan. He’d never heard of Ragged Mountain Equipment before, so he looked us up. Needless to say, he was surprised to discover that the shirt he found halfway around the world was made right here in Intervale, New Hampshire.
You may not know this, but for many years Ragged Mountain Equipment exported a tremendous amount of gear, bags, and clothing to Japan, all made right here in our shop. The Japanese market really appreciated what Ragged had to offer, and it’s exciting to know those pieces are still out there, still being worn, and even finding new owners through thrift shops.
This is just one of the things we love most about Ragged.
We hear stories all the time from customers about their favorite Ragged shirt, jacket, vest, or bag, items we made 20, sometimes even 30 years ago. People come into the store just to show us a jacket they’ve had for decades. We hear from customers in California, Alaska, Europe, and yes, even Japan, who still love the items made right here in our shop.
Of course, we have no intention of resting on our laurels. We’re designing new products, investing in new manufacturing equipment, improving our website, refining our retail mix, and exploring new fabrics, including natural fibers like merino wool. Sure, our history is pretty cool, but we’re building on it for the next 40 years.
The White Mountains are truly unique. Like the weather on top of Mount Washington, you can find things here that you just can’t find anywhere else. We have incredible scenery, amazing people, hardworking local businesses, and a deep outdoor culture. That’s why we believe the White Mountains are the perfect home for Ragged Mountain Equipment. We have a lot in common.
