| When you're agonizing over exactly which layers to bring along on any outdoor pursuit, there's one piece that will get the thumbs up every time: the Ragged Mountain NorthWind Hooded Jacket. It offers superb wind resistance and even a bit of water repellency for essentially no weight or bulk. The ultra-lightweight ripstop fabric will tolerate a ridiculous amount of abuse. Nevertheless, when you pull this jacket on over whatever damp layer you're already wearing, you won't care how tough it is, just how much warmer you feel. Coastline runs, autumn rock climbs, pre-dawn summits, lunchtime skate-ski workouts...all these activities call for just that little extra layer. The front zip gives you easy on/off access, and there are velcro tabs at the cuffs to cinch things down. A small zippered chest pocket is perfect for your keys, wallet, or phone--and it doubles as a stow pocket for the NorthWind when you're not wearing it. The hood has soft elastic binding to seal out the weather and a hook-and-loop tab that allows it to be worn either over or under a helmet. And when we say it's small and light, we really mean it: at 3 oz., it's about equal to the weight of an energy bar. When you ball it up, it will fit in the palm of your hand, and tuck into any pocket.
